Climate Change: Fact or Fiction?

An early November snow in University Park.

State College, Pa. — Scientific research proves that climate change is real, and it does not take an expert to see its effects. From temperature changes to the increased occurrence of natural disasters, there is extensive scientific proof that the global temperature is increasing.

Trump’s top officials, however, have been saying that human activity does not cause climate change; however, a new report says otherwise.

A recent U.S. report from 13 agencies says that human have been causing climate change, going against government officials. The report was released days after Syria announced that they would join the Paris Climate Accord, leaving the U.S. as the only country to leave it.

State College residents seem to side the U.S. report.

Penn State political science major Cormac Hall says that there is no denying that global warming is real.

"There’s like this surmounting body of scientific evidence to support the theory, so I believe it," Hall said.

Penn State meteorologist and climate dynamics professor Dr. Sukyoung Lee says that direct scientific measurements offer evidence backing the report.

"We know that CO2 has been increasing. It’s just measurement. There’s no doubt about that. They’re straight forward measurements, and it has been going up steadily," Dr. Lee said.

"I feel it’s definitely intellectually disingenuous no to be in support of something that’s been proven scientifically," Hall said. "I definitely think that on the right side of the political spectrum, they certainly are thinking about economics a lot, because you know fossil fuels. We’re going into the ground, and we’re drilling out little dinosaurs and using that to fuel our automobiles. If you think about it, that’s certainly going to be big business."

No matter the opinion on the cause of climate change, scientists agree that people must act now and take preventative measures to avoid extreme climate events.
